Only two-thirds of first-year college students return for the second year and less than half of all students graduate in five years. As a result, college teachers are under much pressure to retain students, but are sometimes uncertain as to how to best do that. This workshop offers five (easy) ways to retain your students. These ideas come from the work of retention guru, Vincent Tinto (2005). They are important for all students, but especially first-year students.

  1. Set high expectations.
  2. Advise effectively.
  3. Provide academic, social and personal support.
  4. Engage in frequent and high quality contact with students.
  5. Involve students with their learning.
